DIY Hand Sanitizer
Last Year with the outbreak of Covid -19- I posted this in my group on Facebook, that was before, I had time to create my website. So as we are still dealing with the same issue I thought I would add this to my helpful Health Tips.
Everyone has been inquiring about hand sanitizer, as some of you know I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and Esthetician and an Educator in a secondary school.
So let me start by saying, your skin is the first line of defense in protecting you. Alcohol will dry your skin and actually you will be more susceptible to an invasion.
Don’t get me started, on the chemicals in most hand sanitizers….The FDA doesn’t cover three, which is some of the toxins found in hand sanitizer (benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chloroxylenol).
And beyond being bad for you, the chemicals in antibacterial soaps and sanitizers are harmful to our environment! Even after being treated, triclosan can stick around and get into our water, harming algae and other sea life. This rant will be saved for another day.
So below is my recipe, and just 0.5% of hydrogen peroxide is as effective as alcohol at killing Coronaviruses! Fell free to fact find for yourself. Some of the best antiviral essential oils include oregano, tea tree, eucalyptus, and clove. Other good choices include citronella, geranium, lemongrass, orange, patchouli, and peppermint.
The thing to remember is to rub your hands for at least 30 seconds any time you use your hand sanitizer. If you have been in my class you know I say it is the friction that kills the bacteria.
Some things to remember about home made sanitizer. If you don’t have purified or distilled water, store your hand sanitizer in the fridge or try to use it within a week to avoid any bacterial growth.
Ingredients
* 2 oz. Amber Spray Bottles
* 4 tbsp Hydrogen Peroxide (3% solution)
* 30 drops Essential Oils
* 5 drops Aloe Vera (optional, for moisturization)
* 1 cup distilled/purified water
Instructions
* Combine all ingredients except water and mix well
* Add water and mix well
Pour mixture into individual bottles
Shake before using
