The transition from summer to autumn is a lovely one.
The temperatures are a mix of warm and cool. The trees are half alive and half beginning to rest. This time marks the end of shadow work season and will transition us into the most magical time of the year. My favorite my Darkling’s…. Autumn!!
Known as the pagan Thanksgiving, Mabon marks the Autumn Equinox, and is the beginning of the fall season, when day and night are equal, making it a time of balance, equality and harmony. In ancient times Mabon was a celebration of the second harvest (Lughnasadh was the first) when farmers gathered hearty foods like gourds, pumpkins, grapes and apples.
As we celebrate the harvest we begin to prepare for the cold months ahead and take measures to protect our abundance, health, and well being.
Time to say hello to the dark and goodbye to the light.
While Mabon has roots in Celtic tradition, similar festivals are celebrated across cultures and have been celebrated throughout time. In our modern society this is the season of all things pumpkin and apple! As an equinox, it is the perfect time to re-calibrate yourself and come back to your center. Start fresh with a change in the season, maybe set some goals, maybe just relax and see what the universe sends your way.
Here some suggestions for celebrating the change of the seasons!
MABON POTION
You will need:
1 Part Apple Cider
1 Part Grape Juice
Cinnamon Sticks
Allspice
Cloves
Here’s what to do:
Pour the juice and cider into a crock pot or pot on a stove top. Add in cinnamon sticks (1 or 2), allspice, and cloves to taste. Let it all heat up
and enjoy!
To make this magical, you can set an intention with each spice as you add it. For example, love with the cinnamon, prosperity with the cloves, and good
health with the allspice. Stir your brew clockwise as you mix in your intentions.
Bonus points for cooking this over a fire in your cast iron cauldron.
BLESSING SPELL
You will need:
1 Apple
1 White tealight or small candle
Cinnamon
Salt
Water
To create this spell: take your apple and carve it out to hold the tea light. On your candle write your wish. Place candle in apple. Make cleansing energy salt water, with salt and water.
Leave your apple and candle overnight in the salt water.
Upon the break of day, light the candle, recite the wish, sprinkle the cinnamon upon the apple at dawn to enhance the magick.
MABON RITUAL
You will need:
Falling leaves
String
Here’s what to do: Collect falling leaves. Write an Autumn intention on each leaf than string together the leaves to make a wreath or garland.
Review your leaves come winter to see which ones came true. Give the ones that did back to the earth. Burn the ones that did not while saying a small prayers for spirit to aid you on your quest.
A MAGICAL MOBILE
This will help you stay focused on light and abundance as the dark months arrive.
You will need:
Twine
Glue gun
3 Sunflowers
9 Acorns
Optional: 1 or 2 Sticks
To create this magical mobile: you can either use one or two sticks as the piece from which you will hang the sunflowers and acorns, OR, you can go without the sticks and just hang them as a bunch. Begin by using a glue gun to hot glue various lengths of twine to acorns. Hang the sunflowers upside down along with the twine attached to the acorns in a bundle or attached to the sticks so that they will hang like a mobile. Hang this from the ceiling somewhere in your home to remind you of the warmth of the sun and that everything that you plant during the dark months will begin to grow once the light shines again.
Using three sunflowers and nine acorns harnesses the magical power of three. If you are called to use a different amount, go right ahead!
