Pop culture would have the average person believing that potions are made up of strange animal parts and bits of hard-to-find plants that one must journey into the pits of hell and back to harvest. And that they must be brewed up in the most elegant of cauldrons, naturally.
The truth is that potions are liquids used for any purpose at all. The key is that it is used with a purpose. Whether you are stirring a dash of cinnamon and a sprinkle of inspiration into your morning coffee or conjuring up a healing concoction of essential oils, flower essences, and a mother’s love to heal the most recent evidence of a good bike ride gone bad for a little one, the world of potions is readily available to support you in your everyday life.
Simple steps for creating your first (or next) potion or Spell:
Choose your Purpose
Mix your potion intentionally. First of all, you need to pin down what exactly you are trying to accomplish. It may not take much thinking on this but you do have to take this first step so you know how to proceed from here. Be specific too. Don’t just think “love spell” because you may really want to find a new love or reconnect with an old love. A specific spell is more successful.
Materials
Once you have your intention set out, getting the right materials is the next step in how to make your potion or spell. Take stock of the ingredients in your home. A good list of “correspondences” is where you should start. Spell correspondences refer to a list of items and what purpose they correspond with (such as malachite for wealth). Consider anything that should not be mixed together or that might not work well or taste well together, for your potion.
Herbs: These are all the basic spell herbs you are likely going to have a need for, so now you can start putting together your own spells/potions with a bit more confidence. (I have on hand, just ask, and I can let you know how much. Still adding items.)

Anywhere from 2 to 5 items is usually sufficient for a typical spell/potion but even that can be adjusted to suit your preferences. If you like candles, work with colors and candles. If you prefer crystals, then stick with various stones. It’s up to you.
The Words
Not all spells have to have words, but they do help you focus your energy on your intention when you are casting. This can be a hard part if you are not too creative. Just keep it simple and try to make it rhyme (though that is not necessary). You can also work in a few symbols or Sigils instead of actual words if you prefer.
The Timing
This isn’t as crucial as the other parts of how to make spells, but you can add extra power if you time your spell right. Pick the right day of the week or the right phase of the moon for a little magickal boost. Study some correspondence tables and see when is the best time for your purpose. If it really doesn’t work for you, then anytime is fine.
- Monday (the Moon) – family, kids, spirituality, psychic skills, dreams, female energy, fertility
- Tuesday (Mars) – energy, action, independence, conquering obstacles, dealing with conflict
- Wednesday (Mercury) – creativity, communication, knowledge, jobs, career, education
- Thursday (Jupiter) – wealth, finances, business, legal matters
- Friday (Venus) – love, romance, relationships, family, marriage, social status, sexuality
- Saturday (Saturn) – protection, discipline, overcoming habits, banishing, binding, meditation
- Sunday (the Sun) – general success, abundance, strength, accomplishment, happiness, health
Put it All Together
Here is where most people get a little weak. Going through the motions and reading off your words does not make a successful spell. Your mind has to be focused on what you are trying to do, and you need to take your time.
Visualize your intentions and visualize the energy around you being focused on your task. Picture everything vividly in your mind as you work. This is where experience and practice come in. It’s the inner workings of your mind and thoughts that makes spells work, and that cannot really be taught. Hold it and visualize your intention coming alive.
Circle or No Circle
I have noticed that most spells do not mention casting a circle or calling the quarters. I am not going to delve too deeply into this in this article. A circle is a ring of magickal protection you create around you before each spell. How you do so is up to you and is really considered separate from the spell itself. If this is part of your personal traditional (Wiccans usually do so) then you should perform that circle ritual before the new spell.
~Use it!
You can create potions with ingredients you select on purpose or you can use something like lotion and pour your intentions into something already created. You have endless options when it comes to potion making and it’s one of the easiest ways to make each day feel a little more enchanted. There is no set-in-stone techniques for casting spells or making potions and you will have to work with your magick for a while to determine your style and preferred way of working. You may do better with candle spells or spells with crystals and stones, so plan on doing some experimenting.
