How do You know if you’re a witch?
I often get asked, How did you know, you where a witch? Well for me, I grew up with witches, read more here... right now, this isn’t about me. While there are many kinds of witches, witchcraft, and traditions, witches all have one thing in common: they are attuned to the energy of the universe. This attunement may have arisen naturally—or on the other hand, an individual may have more commonly chosen their path towards witchery. The whole portrayal of the cackling witch with the black robe, black hat, striped socks, black cat, and witch’s broom is far outdone and greatly inaccurate. There are many witches walking among us practicing and flowing with the sync of daily life, and they may present themselves in any way they choose. There are lots of ‘signs of being a witch’, or at least good indicators that you might be a witch. Remember that witches do not all look the same. In fact, they can be any gender, culture, ethnicity, height, size, and shape that you can think.
Here are a “few signs” that I learned in my journeys that might be an indication you are a “Witch:”
- Captivating Eyes
Witches are old souls, having reincarnated for centuries. The eyes often show this, being a window to the soul. For this reason, they tend to have “old soul eyes.” These give them a permanent air of wisdom and deep intuition, as well as being captivating to anyone who locks eyes. If people often mistakenly think you are lost in thought, it could be because of this. On the other hand, some have beautiful, often sparkling, more penetrating eyes that give them an otherworldly appearance. They appear intelligent and intense, drawing you in and bringing you under their thrall.
- Moles & Birthmarks
There have been many myths centered around the marking carried by witches that would give them away, but most are a myth by religious witch hunters in the Middle Ages. According to them, the biggest sign was an extra nipple – which they said would be used for the suckling of familiars. This was complete nonsense, of course, borne from ignorance and leading to the misidentification of many as witches. Some birthmarks and moles appear on witches, but I believe they are a reminder of past lives of a person rather than serving any purpose. Often it is the remnants of torture and execution that appear as birthmarks, though they could also be remnants of initiation or other rituals.
- Palm Symbols
It has become apparent that witches often have physical markings on their palms. Being healers, witches often have “the healer sign” on their palms. This is where you have three or more vertical lines on your palm, directly beneath the pinky finger. Clairvoyance, which witches have in abundance, is often indicated by the marking of a cross on the index finger, as does a circular birthmark on the bottom of your palm. They often have a smaller circle on their upper palm, just below the index and middle fingers. This indicates strong powers of intuition, one of the many characteristics of a witch.
- Tattoos
Having tattoos that hold deep symbolic meaning can indicate a witch. Not everybody who has a tattoo has the talent, but there are few witches that don’t at least get the urge to ink their bodies. The reason for this is in the origin of tattooing. Humans have been marking symbols on their skin in this way for thousands of years, originally as a way to manifest the powers of gods and spirits. Witches have long used tattoos as a way of cementing their magical power. Witches who get tattoos today are following a tradition followed by their kind for thousands of years, and in doing so, unlock the power of their ancestors.
- Feel most Comfortable Outside
This is one of the most telltale signs, in my opinion. Witches work with the energy of the earth and nature. They sync many of their practices to the lunar and solar phases. Have you ever felt charged or felt the need to perform a ritual on a full moon or new moon? Have you ever felt more at peace in nature—deep in a forest or near a body of water—than inside a house or in a crowded public place? Feeling at home in nature is a good indication that you have witch potential—when you’re in it, you feel compelled to bath in the river, touch the trees, lay in the moss, put your feet in the ocean, listen to the birds, and appreciate the sound of dew in the trees. Your senses are essentially heightened when you are submerged in the natural world. I know many witches who worship the moon. (Me) They do their magick by moon phases and really resonate with all things lunar. If you feel connected to the moon, sun, and the stars you might be a witch.
- You Perform Rituals
Rituals here are loosely defined. Rituals can be anything from cleansing your room on a certain lunar phase to feeling the need to bury items in the earth. Maybe you gather items, and your intuition moves you to arrange them a certain way or combine them in a certain way. Perhaps you take herbs regularly, not necessarily because someone told you to, but because it feel’s good in your body. If you have natural tendencies like those described above, you are likely tapping into the universal energy.
- You Communicate With Animals
You will definitely know who you are if you fit into this category. Are animals drawn to you, and are you drawn to animals? Do dogs and cats and other domestic pets seem to love you more than others? Maybe you’ve even felt you could communicate with animals or feel their pain. Perhaps it even seems you have an affinity for sick or injured animals. Do animals seem to come to you for help? If animals take to you natural—including wildlife—and they appear in your life in high frequency, it is likely that you are “neutral” or attractive to them. Whereas the average human’s energy may clash with that of non-human animals, witches tend to attract. This can be anything from neighborhood cats to an owl or deer that reappears in your yard regularly. You may have found that many animals “find you” in your lifetime. This is a good sign.
- People Are Drawn to You
Do you have random strangers tell you their personal problems? Are lost children wont to come to you for help in finding their parents? It’s typical that a witch attracts people who need healing and need help in other ways. Why? Because witches feel deeply for those in need. We feel a deep compassion and that compassion radiates vibes to others. Sometimes we might even be like a flame to moths…attracting toxic people with whom we must eventually cut the cords.
- Your Intuition Is Strong
Have you ever looked through someone? That is, can you see beyond what they are conveying? If you’ve ever heard someone speak but knew more than what they were telling you, or had a bad or good feeling about someone without knowing them, this may indicate that you are likely attuned to the universal energy. Trusting your intuition means you have a strong feeling in your “gut.” This extra sense often leads you to the right answer about a situation, the right path, person, or thing whether present, past, or future.
- You Collect Natural “Tools”
Perhaps when you stroll out in nature, you are always coming across bones, shells, feathers, precious stones, abalone shells, or natural anomalies. If you have collected these items over the years, you may have been collecting them to “do work.” Learning how to use them will often require the guidance of a seasoned witch or a little bit of research on your end.
- You Have an Understanding of Herbs
Herbs are of great use to witches. Herbalism or herbology is simply the use of herbs to cure or treat physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or psychic ailments. Herbs can be used in craft for protection, communication, abundance, and for similar intentions. If you use herbs regularly and have a natural, unexplained tendency towards working with them, this is a good indicator of your magickal tendencies. Now, this doesn’t mean you’re against western medicine (necessarily), but just that you believe in the healing power of Mother Earth. Witches have been healing with natural methods since time immemorial…healing means identifying the cause of an issue and fixing it. Not just treating the symptoms and masking it.
-
Old in Soul, Young at Heart
Has anyone ever told you you are an “old soul”? Maybe you’ve always been wise beyond your years. Yet, even in feeling like you’ve been on earth many times, you still feel young at heart. This is a common sign you’re a witch. You make wise decisions and “know” things. But you’ll also go play in a puddle with the kiddos, make mud pies, or skip through a field of flowers. There is no ruling about whether or not someone can be too young to be a witch. Life experience and maturity is a huge indication of ones’ magickal abilities. Witches tend to observe and assess and act accordingly. Witches, too, have a healthy and respectful understanding of life events like birth and death.
- You’re Introverted by Choice
Many witches have work to do. If you find yourself overwhelmed by busy places like malls, theme parks, etc. and avoid them entirely for peace of mind, you may simply be protecting or keeping your natural abilities healthy. The side effects of polluted energy present as headaches, moodiness, and fatigue. Some people can be energy vampires, and witches much prefer to be in contemplative settings away from chaos and busy happenings.
- You Sense Energy
Much like seeing through people (not to be confused with psychic or clairvoyant abilities), you can feel the energy of people and the places that surround you. Witches often can assess an environment or an object’s energetic field. If an object has been cursed or used in dark practices, they will know. On the other hand, if a space has light energy or an object has been used in good, benevolent practices, a witch will know.
- Technology Is Hit or Miss
Too much computer, television, or screen time for anyone can have detrimental effects, but for witches, in particular, technology can feel poisonous. If a witch is surrounded by too much technology, they may start to feel mental fog from electromagnetic pollution. This is not the case for all witches, however, as some may use technology freely and without issue.
- You Question Everything
People that are followers, that go along with what society tells them, aren’t typically witches. I’ve found that the wisest people on this planet are questioners. They question everything. Since the time I was a child, I was always asking “why”? Why did God make mosquitos? Why did God make the Devil if he is all powerful and all knowing? I often got in trouble for my many questions mainly because I stumped adults. As an adult, I still ask questions. I want to know the why behind everything. It helps me understand and learn. And it’s a quality of a witch.
- Storms and Natural Events Charge You
If you feel your spirit stir at the sight of lightning, the sound of thunder, the crashing of waves in a storm swell, or the rush of heavy winds, this is a strong indication. Witches tend to work with nature and natural energy, so any kind of divergence from the status quo is a perfect opportunity for work and recharge. For them, nothing is more thrilling than sensing the movement of the universal energy.
- You’re Attracted to the Paranormal
This means you had or have a desire to learn about or experience ghosts, aliens, cryptids, demons, and other paranormal beings. Maybe as a child you found ghost stories thrilling. Maybe as an adult you’re part of a paranormal investigations team or are addicted to the ghost hunter shows on TV. Witches are drawn to the paranormal because we have a foot in this world and a foot in the spirit world. So, naturally, we want to learn more and know more about spirits of all kinds.
- You’re Attracted to the Occult
The “occult” means things that are hidden. Topics that are out of the realm of society’s “norms”. As a child or teenager, you might have tried out the Ouija board. Maybe now you want to learn how to read tarot cards or how to heal with crystals. You attend psychic fairs and find yourself enthusiastic about the occult in general. If this is you, you might be a witch.
- Supernatural Experiences
Adding onto a witch’s interest in the paranormal, a witch also typically has at least a dozen supernatural experiences in his or her life. These experiences begin as a child and continue into adulthood, especially if the witch believes and is connected to the spirit realm. Supernatural experiences are anything from seeing or hearing ghosts to “time travel” (losing hours of time with no explanation), seeing auras around people or things, encounters with extraterrestrials, and being visited by the deceased or angels.
- Your A Dreamer
Most witches I’ve known are avid dreamers. Either they have vivid dreams dating back to their childhood or they are lucid dreamers. This means you are conscious in some of your dreams. Often witches are natural lucid dreamers and sometimes even astral projectors. If you’ve had lots of flying dreams since childhood OR if you “dreamwalk” into other peoples’ dreams.
- You’re an Oddball
You didn’t “fit in” in school. You were the oddball or even an outcast. Maybe you were bullied for being weird. You’re probably still weird. Don’t fight it! This is another big sign you’re a witch. Witches have long been the quirky “odd” people in the crowd. They don’t care to fit in, though. Witches care more about learning, experiencing, healing and growing than they do about fitting into society’s “norms”. So embrace your weirdness! I know I finally do!
- Past Time Periods Interest You
Since I was little, I was drawn to the time periods of the past. The Victorian era and the Wild West, the 1930s, 1950s. I loved the home interior designs, the clothing, the music, and everything about these past decades. Witches are drawn to the past because most of us have lived many lives. We remember those lives in our souls and are therefore attracted to things from those lives. Are you a fan of vintage clothing? Old movies? Old houses? I have an insatiable appetite for history, archaeology, and all things from the ancient to Medieval past. I’ve always had a love for history. If you enjoy reading history books about the Witch Trials, pagan cultures of the past, Greek mythology, etc. etc.
- Feel a Longing to “Go Home”
Have you ever felt homesick but don’t know why? There’s a longing in your soul to “go home”, but you’re not quite sure where that is? This is a big sign of being a witch because witches feel pulled to the Otherworld. OR to a place where they lived in a past life. Some even feel pulled to go home to the stars…
- Visions
Ever had a random image or scene play in your mind? And at the time it happened you had no idea what it meant? Or maybe you did. But either way, you have visions of things that have either happened in the past or will happen in the future. This is a sign you’re a witch and have claircognizant and/or clairvoyant abilities. I believe everyone is born with abilities, it’s just that disbelief makes us forget. Witches don’t forget and are often in-tune with the earth and energies around them.
- Prophetic Dreams
To elaborate on being a dreamer, you might have had prophetic dreams. Or have them often. These are dreams that foretell the future. Sometimes they’re not so fun. Sometimes they’re good. Either way, you’re tapping into the spirit world and being shown events to come during your dream time.
- Empathy
You were told as a child “you’re too sensitive”. And as an adult, it seems you can actually feel other peoples’ emotions. Sometimes you feel their pain, physically or emotionally. This goes beyond sympathy and compassion, it goes into the realm of empathy. You may be clairsentient (clear-feeling) and/or an empath. Many witches are empaths and clairsentients.
- Hearing Voices
You hear voices. Sometimes they’re inaudible, sometimes they are clear as a bell. But they are not side effects of a psychological illness…they are manifestations of your clairaudient abilities (clear-hearing). This means you hear spirits, angels, elementals, and you might even hear people’s thoughts.
- Phantom Scents
Along the same lines as clairvoyance, clairsentience, and clairaudience, if you get whiffs of “phantom” scents, you might be a witch. A phantom scent is an aroma that seems to come out of nowhere. And it can’t be explained by logical reasoning.
- Spirits Visit Your Dreams
Another aspect of dreaming for witches is being visited by people in our dreams. Sometimes people who are still alive visit us, or we visit them. OR we have visits from ancestors or passed loved ones. Yet more proof witches are connected with the spirit world and astral plane.
Have you ever felt like you were paralyzed in bed? You woke up and might’ve seen spirits, monsters, etc. around you or holding you down? This is called sleep paralysis and is experienced by people who are connected to the spirit realm AND are natural astral travellers. If you’re still wondering, “am I a Witch” and you experience this plus other signs, you probably are, my friend!
- Deja Vu
Have you ever been somewhere for the first time but felt you’d been there before? Or maybe you’ve had a conversation with someone and swore you’d had that same conversation before. Deja vu is common among witches and falls under the realm of precognition or potentially past or parallel lives.
- Strong Intuition
That gut feeling that tells you not to get in the car and then the car crashes that night. That’s your intuition talking. Always listen to it. It WON’T fail you. A sign you’re a witch is having that strong intuition that has saved you or others in multiple situations. This is beyond claircognizance and clairvoyance, this is our connection to our primal instincts.
- Seeing the Beauty Where Others Don’t
You look up into the sky on a daily basis. You marvel at the beauty of swaying trees or tiny budding flowers. Yet everyone around you stares blankly at the road in front of them. They seem to be on a hamster wheel of life, while you’re over here smelling the roses. Witches see the beauty in places, things, and in people when everyone else around them doesn’t. It’s because we know the earth is magical. And WE are magical.
- Witchy and Fantasy Movies
One of the first ways I knew I wanted to be a witch was because I loved witch and fantasy movies so much as a child, ok, if I am being honest still love them. My favorites were Hocus Pocus, The Wizard of Oz, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Practical Magic. I couldn’t get enough of fantasy, especially when it involved or featured witches as the main characters. If you found yourself wanting to be Winifred Sanderson or Sally Owens, you’re one of many witches.
- Dragons, Mermaids, and Fairies Oh My!
Continuing our fantasy and mythical themes, if you’re a witch you might have always been interested in mythical creatures. Dragons, mermaids, unicorns and fairies are just a few. Maybe you had dragon figurines in your room or you loved playing a fairy board game as a child. Maybe as an adult you’re obsessed with mermaids. This is a common witch trait! Witches work in the magic realms…and often these “mythical” creatures are very real in other spiritual realms.
- Day Dreamers
Did anyone ever tell you your head was in the clouds? Or that you day dream too much? Again another sign of being a witch because you have the ability to enter other states of consciousness. Having a vivid imagination is a great trait to have – it means you can visualize things easier and then they manifest easier! The mind is a powerful thing.
- You Think, Then Manifest
Remember that time you really needed money to pay your bills but you didn’t know where it was going to come from? Then you remembered your old friend owed you a couple hundred bucks but hadn’t paid you back? A week later, you find a check from your old friend in the mail. Whoa! How did you do that? Witches think and manifest.
So are you a witch? Do you do ‘witchy’ things? In my opinion witchery is the practice of magic. One definition of magic is a quality that makes something seem removed from everyday life, especially in a way that gives delight. Another is something that has a delightfully unusual quality. I love the idea of being delightfully unusual. If someone described me as being delightfully unusual I would take that as quite the compliment. Wouldn’t it be amazing to live a life, create a future, and look at all the world as if it were an opportunity for your personal magic making? Your personal invitation to explore that which seems impossible but brings a smile to your face at just the thought of it? That’s what witchery is.
Witchery is what you make of it and nothing more.
There are so many myths around being who identifies as a witches or those who incorporate magical practices into their daily lives. Here are a a couple ones:
1. Witches and witchery denounce other religious belief systems or are embracing some dark and evil way of being.
2. You must be initiated into the practice of witchery. Untrue! There are many belief systems that revolve around community, deity, and nature that might require you to learn something specific or attend a ceremonial initiation event of some sort, but witchery is not one of them. In fact, witchery itself is not so much a belief system as a way of being. Throughout history those who have been accused of and punished for witchcraft did not identify as witches. They were often people who had an unusual quality about them or who lived on the fringe of society. They may have been herbal healers, single women with money, or just someone chosen to point a finger at. Witchery in and of itself is not a specific belief system.
3. There is something evil about being a witch. Totally untrue. People who choose to embrace the magical lifestyle of being a witch are those who choose compassion. Those who choose to be different and unusually delightful in their way of being. Being evil has nothing to do with being a witch or practicing witchery and has everything to do with simply being evil (not so great people come from all walks of life, am I right?).
Working with magical practices and incorporating them into our lives is a great way to actively craft the future of your visions. Why sit around hoping for something to happen when you can actively work to create it in a way that feels unusually delightful?
Here are a few thoughts on what the word “witch” means:
- A wise woman.
- A wise woman with abilities to heal emotionally, physically and mentally – herself and others.
- A wise teacher.
- Being intune with intuition.
- Having a connection with nature, the earth and the elements – earth, wind, fire and water.
- Working with the cycles and rhythms of the Moon and Astrology.
- Connection to your past and the ability and willingness to work on your shadows.
- A conscious decision to stand against the common flow of beliefs.
- Happiness without limits!
- Reclaiming what has been taken generations ago.
- Power – knowing your own power, reclaiming your power, tapping into your power.
- A woman who has stepped into her power and uses her power to manifest what she wants and needs in life.
- Being your authentic, unique, true self.
- Practising rituals with cards, astrology, the Moon and other ancient knowledge to utilise your own power and to create magic to make life more fulfilling and magical.
- A gift for making the mundane and the ordinary extraordinary.
Doesn’t that all sound awesome!? Utilizing magical practices of the past and present we can ideate a future that feels expansive, enchanted, and purely delightful. Working with your own energy, natural elements around you, or tokens of intention are just a few ways that we can practice witchery to conjure a carefully cultivated future. Candles, crystals, and tarot cards are just a few tangible tools that folks who embrace the wild world of witchery use in their daily lives. Nature walks, meditation, and visualization are tools that are totally free and available to all of us immediately.
There are many different kinds of witches and ways of being a witch and the word ‘witch’ often differs accordingly. The word is also influenced by fairy tale and pop culture. There are so many layers and contradictions in its meaning. If you still have doubts, you should do some extra research to help you discover your past and present self.
I say, embrace the word in your own life and spread a little ‘witchery,’ here and there. Welcome my Witchy Friend, Blessed be My darkling’s.
