Loving myself. What does loving one self really mean?
Self-love may take the form of relaxing hot showers, calming baths, scented candles, enjoying a cup of tea while reading your favorite book, going for a jog, finding clothes you like, treating yourself to a spa day, and good food.
But self-love isn’t really just about pampering yourself.
Is loving ourselves being able to look in the mirror for once without criticizing our own bodies? Is loving ourselves finally feeling content with where you are at in life? Is loving ourselves being able to be happy for both yourself and others when we achieve success? Does loving ourselves involve speaking and thinking kindly of ourselves? Does loving ourselves include listening to our needs and putting ourselves first sometimes?
This is the truth: self-love is not just a pretty physical process. For many of us, we need to learn how to conquer and keep our demons in check. After acceptance, we then need to tackle both the ups and the downs before we can truly move forward towards change. Trying to suppress what we feel may seem like a solution in the moment — but the problem may grow bigger than what it originally is in the long run if it wasn’t addressed.
Is there a way to really truly love ourselves 100%? Maybe, maybe not. As judgmental as we can be about others, many of us have ourselves as our own worst critic.
There is a saying that those who have known what darkness and pain feels like can go either one of two ways: either they dwell in their darkness, or they feel more inclined to spread the light they wished they could have had. I’m going to be honest: I’m still struggling in the process of truly loving myself. There are days where I’m able to genuinely laugh with my friends, while there are also days where I can barely muster a smile. Although I do have moments where I have felt genuinely, it does not discount the weight I feel on my shoulders once I have to face my thoughts. I feel especially bitter and frustrated about the person that I become on the days I feel consumed by my own darkness. In those moments, I question who I am and the parts of me that I have lost.
Have I found a solution for the thoughts and the pit of darkness I find myself in? Not entirely. But I am reminding myself that despite the grueling process, I have the choice to allow something beautiful to grow from it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow — but I’ll get there one day.
The point of this story is this: most of us find it easier to stay broken rather than driving towards change. In really tackling our mental health, many have shared that there is a struggle to take the effort to make changes — for change requires greater effort in comparison to festering in the problem. It was easier to just adapt around the mirror because we already bought it, rather than needing to buy another mirror and admitting we screwed up with our purchase.
Sometimes what doesn’t kill you gives you a lot of unhealthy coping mechanisms and a really dark sense of humor. However, you are only stuck in that version of you if you allow yourself to be. Yes, you are used to act or be a certain way because these have helped you in the past. But the reason why you find yourself being unable to move forward is because you keep applying the same old formula to a new level in your life. Be unafraid to change this formula from your past to get you a different result in the future.
– RITUAL–
The tools below are what is included in my I am Enough Ritual. (Click to view) If you do not have these tools, use your intuition to choose a suitable replacement item from mother earth and your personal collection.
The heart chakra is a conduit for giving and receiving love. When open and receptive, we experience an expanded capacity for intuition and tenderness. Through heart-focused rituals, we experience a boost in energy, positivity, love, compassion, and an increased sense of connectedness to life.
I’ve designed this ritual to engage with the teachings of Anahata, the fourth chakra, and the gateway to our higher consciousness. The heart chakra is the home to understanding, compassion, and devotion.
This ritual has several steps. Ideally, it’s best to perform when you have an evening to yourself, or at least a few hours of undisturbed ‘me-time.’
Begin with a pre-ritual bath. Grab the bath bomb and any herbs or oils you’d like to include. Roses, jasmine, lavender, and thyme are all wonderful plant allies that connect us to the subtle energies within the heart chakra. Gather your coziest clothes (robes, fuzzy socks, slippers—whatever makes you feel warm, soft, and secure) and head to the bathroom. Or grab a bar of my Reclaiming Your Energy Sea Salt Soap.
Whether you choose to take a bath, a shower, or partake in symbolic handwashing is up to you. Whatever you decide, spend ample time sensing the water droplets as they envelop your skin and cascade off your body. As your body warms and circulation increases, ask your highest self to release any unfavorable thoughts that have taken up residence in the physical body—specifically in the heart center.
Finish your bath, get dressed, brew a cup of Heart Chakra tea, or Moon Milk and return to your sacred space.
In lieu of sitting on the floor, find a comfortable chair and sit in front of your altar, desk, table, or another surface where you can keep an eye on your posture while writing love letters. Sit up straight, shoulders away from the ears, chest open, and heart chakra expanded.
Rest the five blank cards in the center of your space and place the fluorite stone atop the stack. When working through complex issues, especially those of the heart, peace-loving purple fluorite is a trusted ally. Not only does this stone draw lifeforce into the body (also referred to as Chi or Prana depending on your ideology), but it uses that energy to relieve stress, heal intimacy issues, and overcome energetic blockages.
One by one, remove a card from beneath the fluorite and begin writing your love letters. For some of us, writing is very therapeutic, but for others, a blank piece of paper presents quite a challenge. Tap into your heart by writing whatever comes to mind—this is called a stream of consciousness. Put your thoughts on paper before the mind has a chance to question them.
Write love letters to yourself, someone who inspires you, and someone who could benefit from your wisdom. You may write letters to anyone you wish, but I suggest the following:
- Your childhood self. Reconnect with the inner child who lives in the heart and is often silenced with age.
- Yourself in the present moment. Instead of focusing on the attributes that make up your physical and material identity, try to connect with your highest self.
- Your future self. Our actions in the present are what create the future, so show gratitude to the person you’re striving to be.
- A mentor, lover (former or current), friend, or family member who’s left a lasting imprint on your soul.
- And finally, write a love letter to a stranger who might benefit from your successes, failures, wisdom, and life experiences.
As you finish each card, tear off a small corner and place inside of the totem bag before moving onto the next. After this ritual, display the talisman on your altar as a reminder to check in with the energies carried within the heart.
When all five letters are complete, it’s time to send them to their rightful owners. Leave the love letter for a stranger at a threshold—the edge of the woods, the gates to a cemetery, the mouth of a cave, a windowsill, or in front of a mirror will do just fine. The letters for your inner child, present self and future self should be addressed and mailed to your home. When they arrive, read aloud, and record your thoughts and emotions in your journal.
If you prefer to send these letters energetically, use fire as the messenger. Head outside or stand near an open window if igniting on a burn plate. Or, toss them one by one into a lit fireplace and let the wind carry your words skyward where they will dutifully find their way towards their rightful owner.
Casting your own magic spells takes skill and patience and isn’t recommended in most cases. I provide these “do it yourself” spells for educational purposes, but it is strongly recommended that you consult an experienced spell caster such as myself and allow me to do the work for you.
This way you know it’s being done by someone experienced and knowledgeable and I’m also always here to answer questions about your casting and provide follow-up at no additional charge.
WThis energy clearing will eliminate the negative energy in your body and aura, that was built up as a result of health-related issues and other trauma.
