The January Moon

by Mia Hudson / Tuesday, 19 January 2021 / Published in All things Moon
The month of January is a great time to reflect on your evolutionary progress thus far and plant seeds for the future. It is an invitation to re-evaluate your goals, challenge your values, and cultivate personal power in preparation for the year ahead.  Think about the goals you have in mind, and what is standing in the way of your progress.   In order to achieve your ambitions, allow what isn’t serving you to die. This is an opportunity to be intentional and purposeful about what you take with you into the new year!
The Farmers’ Almanac tell us that January’s full moon is known as the Wolf Moon – Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily during the winter.

The Wise Witches Society, this moon is known as the Storm Moon.  A storm is said to rage most fiercely just before it ends, and the year usually follows suit.  “This moon is also known as Ice Moon, Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, and Cold Moon. This moon was said to warn hunters of falling ice from the trees. This is a time for introspection. Save your energy, stop worrying about others and concentrate on yourself. The zodiac association is Capricorn.

Capricorn invites us to take our commitments seriously, and reflect on what we want to build over time.  Have the courage to pursue and fight for the life you desire. Be brave enough to challenge beliefs and values that reflect unworthiness. It is easy to dream about what you want, but receiving it will be difficult if you don’t believe you deserve it.

The Celtic Tree Calendar, it is the Rowan Moon. The rowan carries with it in the energies and magic of protection, strength, and success in new ventures. Known as the tree of power, causing life and magic to flower.  The Rowan Tree forecast a bright future for you. Red being the color of fire, Rowan means “flame.”  One of the folk names of the rowan is the quicken tree, as it was said to bring forth success. Rowan’s name also means “a secret” or “to whisper”. Its berry is shaped like a five-pointed star, first of all, the symbol of magical protection against spells, enchantments, and glamour.
This moon has deep ties with the goddess Brigid, as she is closely tied to the the magic of the Rowan. A fitting set of qualities for the first full moon of this year! And Irish legend holds that Brigid had arrows made of the sacred word of the Rowan. When she would aim and release these arrows into the sky, the arc of their flight path would mimic the seasons: ascent from spring to summer, reaching a pinnacle, descending into autumn, and falling to winter below the horizon line.
You, too, my Darkling, are a magical creature, able to use you intuition and higher understanding to both enchant and protect. Trust your insights, and act upon them – even if you’re seen as “unusual” or “unpredictable” by others. Your ability to envision the future is priceless.  Focus on how to go about getting your goals. Spells involving communication and physic connects work well at this time of the year. Below I hope you will find some helpful information.
Medicinal properties of the Rowan:
The berries contain a high concentration of Vitamin C, a good preventative and treatment for scurvy. They also contain organic acids, tannins, sugars. The berries have been used to make general tonics for the body since the ripe berries are mildly purgative and diuretic.

Magickal properties of the Rowan tree:

Using meditation, Rowan is helpful with clearing the mind and opening our inspiration. The Essence of Rowan is used in vibrational medicine to assist in attuning us to nature, broadening perspectives, and making room for a deeper understanding of our place here in the universe.  It also has a significant role in protection. Rowan wood was traditionally used to make spindles and spinning wheels, tool handles, stakes and pegs, dowsing and divining rods. A rowan wand or walking stick will protect you from being harmed on a journey and bring spiritual enlightenment along your path.

The Rowan Moon Petition: Moon of the Quicken Tree, May success and protection shine down fast upon me.  I am protected and indestructible. Come what may, I am loved.  I accept the sweetness and abundance of Life and acknowledge my gifts.  I honor the energy of Rowan for protection against evil enchantment. I will not hobble myself with the chains of past failures. So mote it be.

Spells to do during The January Moon:

  • Use a handful of dried Rowan berries for Rowan berry tea.  Place them in the center of a small square of white or purple cloth. Gather the cloth over the berries and tie it into a bundle with white or purple ribbon. Hang this in your kitchen during flu season or keep it for the entire winter.
  • Combine the magic of the Rowan Moon with the candle magic of Imbolc.  Fill a small pot with earth and then hold a white candle in your right hand.  Concentrate on what you want to grow this year.  Plant the candle in the soil saying: “Mother Brigid, I ask you to nurture my dream, may it grow with your blessed light.”  Light the candle and see its flame expand, taking strength from the Sun.  After seeking the help of the Goddess through candle magic, plant a seed as an offering of thanks to Her in a favorite place and wait for your wish to grow.

Use this meditation and a magic mirror to help increase your psychic powers. prop up a round mirror on a table, surrounded by rowan leaves, berries and 3 white candles. Close your eyes and say aloud, “My lady, open my inner eye to grant clear vision.” Focus on the center of your forehead and “direct” your breathing on this spot. Half-open your eyes and gaze in the mirror.  Focus on your breath and register any images that drift into your mind.  Repeat this process regularly and your visions will improve.

Attune to the Moon:

  • Imagine above you the round glowing disc of the moon, bathing you in a protective circle of light. Vibrant with energy, your space is transformed, filled with the purity of spirit. Stand and raise your arms above your head. Let your palms face each other and curve slightly toward the moon. Feel as though you’re a sacred chalice, drawing the power of the Great Mother into every cell of your being—from your toes, to your womb, to your breasts, to your jaw, and your eyes. Feel the pleasure of this energy. It is vibrant with the power to give, to receive, to nurture life, and manifest what is possible. Draw your hands to your heart. Massage this area. Feel that you have become the goddess, capable of balancing the earth and harmonizing its opposing forces. Read the affirmations and visualize the world’s darkness dissolving with your breath. Find a comfortable rhythm and repeat the statements until your light has transformed the world. See the world bathed in the purifying light of your offering: the sleeping babies, the politicians arguing, the starving children, liars and thieves. See the world transforming with this light, growing peaceful and calm. When you are ready, bring your hands to your sides, palms facing the earth. Send your divine light deep into the earth. See this energy take shape as a round moon, gathering below you in the center of the earth. Feel yourself slowly coming back into your body. Rest in this peace until you are ready to return to your life. Blessed be.
  • Lighting an empowerment candle: Obtain a large red candle and set an intention to cultivate personal power. Light the candle and visualize yourself as a powerful being. Feel the strength in your body. You can light the candle and use this technique whenever you feel disempowered.
  • Make a list of affirmations: Think about what you desire in your life, and list all of the reasons why you deserve it. You can call in the goddess Venus for support. Feel into your worthiness and take time for self-care. Wear your favorite dress or treat yourself to a hot bath. Repeatedly tell yourself that you are worthy of all that you desire.
