Wild Lettuce: The Natural Pain Killer (That Works Quickly)

For people just getting started with natural remedies wild lettuce is one of the most useful plants to know. It has a milky substance contains the natural chemicals lactucin and lacttucopicrin.  These are the substances that are responsible for its pain-killing properties.  Lactuca virosa, aka wild lettuce.  The Latin name “Lactuca” means “milk juice” and refers to the milky substance (Lactucarium) which comes out of the plant when it is cut.

History: I couldn’t find any information about when it was introduced to the USA.  However, many foragers claim that Native Americans used it as a natural pain reliever and medicinal remedy.  Its use goes back to ancient Egypt, and depictions of it were seen in hieroglyphics. Wild lettuce is in the Asteraceae, the sunflower family. There are 10 species of Wild lettuce that grow in the United States, both native and introduced. Most of them are medicinal as they exude scads of latex, which is likely where much of the medicinal properties lay. Wild Lettuce is also known as opium lettuce, bitter lettuce, wild opium, horse thistle, China lettuce and prickly lettuce.

Benefits: Most of the scientific studies were for its pain-relieving properties. However, throughout history, wild lettuce has been used to treat a wide arrange of ailments:
